How Anti-static Bubble Packaging Has Evolved: Materials, Structures and Service Life
ESD packaging now includes film bags, bubble laminates, shielding structures and foam cushioning. The company product manual describes several resistance ranges and constructions. Choosing between them requires the application, handling environment and test evidence; a product name or a nominal service life is not enough.
Resistance ranges and product structures
The company manual groups products into ranges including 10⁹–10¹¹ Ω, 10⁶–10⁸ Ω and 10³–10⁶ Ω. These are product-range descriptions, not a universal selection rule for every electronic device.
Film bags, bubble laminates and EPE foam structures provide different mechanical protection. Surface resistance, electrostatic shielding and cushioning are separate properties. Shielding performance must be specified and tested separately from surface resistance.
What evidence supports a service-life claim?
A claim such as “three-year anti-static performance” needs an identified material, storage and use conditions, an ageing method and acceptance criteria. A short accelerated-ageing test cannot be converted into a field life without a supported correlation.
- Request initial and post-ageing resistance and charging results.
- Record conditioning, humidity, temperature and sample identification.
- For shielding bags, assess shielding and closure integrity as well.
- Confirm the required storage duration and reuse conditions in the order specification.
3 often-overlooked process details
- Material treatment: confirm whether performance comes from additives, a coating or a multilayer structure and how it changes with handling and storage.
- Layer construction: agree the layer sequence and request evidence for the finished bag.
- Closure and reuse: test the intended closure and handling cycles; do not infer a reuse guarantee from the closure type alone.
·Selection steps·
Step-by-Step Guide
- 01
Ask 3 questions before selecting
① Is the component an IC, PCB, or finished device? ② Is it already charged or uncharged? ③ Is ESD sensitivity ordinary / sensitive / extreme?
- 02
Confirm lifespan requirement
Specify the required storage duration, environment and reuse conditions rather than relying on a generic service-life claim.
- 03
Request accelerated aging report
Request ageing results, sample identification and the evidence linking the test to the claimed service life.
·Frequently asked questions·
Frequently Asked Questions
01 How should surface resistance be reported?
Report the measured value with the test method, electrodes, conditioning, temperature and humidity for the identified material.
02 Does a resistance value prove shielding?
No. Surface resistance and shielding are different properties. Request the applicable shielding test for the finished construction.
03 Do all 5G components need the same packaging?
No. Follow the component manufacturer’s sensitivity information and the customer’s handling and ESD control requirements.
