How long does a pallet cover insulate? Thermal packaging selection and testing
A pallet cover has no universal insulation duration for every load and route. Define the permitted product temperature, starting temperature, ambient profile, load configuration and transit duration, then verify the complete packaging system.
What conditions determine the test brief?
Swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.
| Input | What to record | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Product requirement | Permitted and initial temperatures | Define acceptance criteria |
| Route | Season, handling, waiting and total time | Build an ambient test profile |
| Load | Mass, stacking, voids and pallet dimensions | Define the complete configuration |
| Packaging | Cover, base, closure and thermal accessories | Match testing to actual use |
| Temperature record | Sensor positions, intervals and equipment | Make results reviewable |
These inputs form a test brief. A short temperature difference, material conductivity value or single sensor reading does not establish a guaranteed duration for a route.
Material reports vs whole-package tests
A material report should identify the method, specimen construction, thickness and test conditions. Check that these match before comparing results. Material data does not itself validate a loaded pallet in transit.
ISTA lists thermal transport packaging tests that can inform discussions with a test provider. Select the method for the package, route and acceptance objective; do not automatically apply a parcel procedure to every pallet shipment.
Retain complete temperature curves, ambient records, loading photographs, closure details and any deviations, rather than only a favourable temperature difference.
What the product-manual tests actually recorded
The figures below come from a double-sided metallised bubble pallet-cover test. They show the tested load and sensor positions, not a guaranteed hold time for another shipment.
- Sunlight, 12:00
- 70.0°C ambient / 30.8°C at the carton bottom
- Cold test, hour 8
- −10°C ambient / 3.5°C at carton top / −3.5°C at carton bottom
At 12:00, the recorded ambient was 70.0°C and the carton bottom was 30.8°C. The manual presents these eight daytime points, not a complete 48-hour raw series.
At hour 8, the carton-bottom sensor read −3.5°C. Some difference rows in the manual do not reconcile with its raw temperatures, so this chart uses the temperature rows only.

Share the loaded pallet size, cargo temperature range, starting temperature, route, exposure time and target acceptance conditions. We can then discuss construction, sampling and a suitable test.
What should be agreed from sampling to reuse?
Before sampling, provide actual pallet or container dimensions, load height, handling method, base-sheet needs and openings. Check seams, fit and handling during the trial.
Before reuse, check damage, seams, contamination and deformation against agreed inspection and retesting requirements. Do not assume a fixed reuse count, moisture protection level or insulation duration without evidence.
For strictly temperature-controlled goods, obtain storage, transport and acceptance requirements from the cargo owner before evaluating the complete proposal. This guide makes no pharmaceutical suitability or certification claim.
·Selection steps·
Step-by-Step Guide
- 01
Define the thermal objective
Define cargo conditions, permitted temperatures and transit duration.
- 02
Record the load and route
Provide dimensions, loading details and ambient conditions.
- 03
Agree the test plan
Agree profiles, sensor positions and acceptance criteria.
- 04
Validate and approve
Retain test records and approve samples and handling instructions.
·Frequently asked questions·
Frequently Asked Questions
01 Does a cover guarantee temperature throughout a long journey?
No universal guarantee follows from buying a cover. Validate the full packaging and temperature-control plan for the load, initial temperature, environment and duration.
02 Can conductivity alone compare two pallet covers?
First check construction, thickness, method and conditions. Then evaluate the loaded system, including seams and closures.
03 Which dimensions are needed for a quotation?
Provide loaded length, width and height, stating whether the pallet is included. Specify base, closure and opening requirements and attach loading photographs.
